How to Install GTA 6 Mods

A complete 2026 guide to installing custom mods for GTA 6 - vehicle packs, script mods, texture overhauls, MLO interiors and everything in between. Works for every paid mod on the marketplace.

1

Back up your game files

Before any mod install, copy your GTA 6 install folder somewhere safe. If anything breaks, you can restore in seconds instead of reinstalling a 150GB game.

2

Install the prerequisites

Most GTA 6 mods need two things - a script hook framework (loads C#/Lua mods) and a file browser tool (edits RPF archives). Both are free and take under a minute to install.

3

Download your mod

Grab the mod from the marketplace. Every download is a single .zip, .rar or .7z archive with a readme, version tag and installation notes from the creator.

4

Extract the archive

Use 7-Zip, WinRAR or the built-in Windows zip extractor. Extract to a temporary folder - never directly into your game directory in case something unexpected lands.

5

Install the files

Script mods (.asi, .dll) drop into your GTA 6 install root. Texture and model mods use your file browser tool to swap files inside RPF archives. Follow the mod's readme - every creator writes specific install steps.

6

Launch offline

Start GTA 6 in Story Mode or a private session. Never load custom mods while connected to GTA Online - it will result in a permanent account ban.

Install methods by mod type

Each GTA 6 mod type has a slightly different install path. Pick your mod type to see exactly what to do.

Script Mods

.asi / .dll files

Script mods add new gameplay - trainers, law enforcement systems, AI overhauls, menu mods. Drop the .asi or .dll file directly into your GTA 6 install root (same folder as GTA6.exe).

Script mods typically need a script hook framework installed first.

Vehicle Mods

Add-on vs replace

Vehicle mods come in two flavors: add-on (new vehicle that spawns alongside defaults) and replace (swaps a base game car).

Add-on vehicles install via the file browser tool to the vehicle DLC folder. Replacements swap the original files inside RPF archives.

Textures & Visuals

4K skins, ReShade presets

Texture replacements (4K skins, weather packs, lighting presets) install through your file browser tool by swapping files inside the game's texture archives (.ytd, .rpf).

ReShade presets drop into a separate ReShade install folder outside the game directory.

Maps & MLO

.ymap / .ybn files

Map mods add new geometry and interiors. Most ship as .ymap or .ybn files that install to the custom maps folder, with .ydr/.ytd assets inside RPF archives.

Large map overhauls may need a memory extender tool to avoid crashes on load.

Audio

Engine, radio, weapons

Audio replacements (engine sounds, radio stations, weapon audio) swap files inside the game's audio RPF archives.

Most audio mods ship with detailed readmes because audio file paths are case-sensitive and easy to get wrong.

Player Mods

Skins & outfits

Player mods (skins, outfits, full model replacements) install through your file browser tool, replacing the mp_m / mp_f character files inside the game's streamed peds archive.

Outfit packs are usually drag-and-drop through a menu mod after install.

Common install problems and fixes

If you hit one of these after an install, 95% of the time the fix is one of the five below.

Game crashes on startup

Remove the most recent mod, verify game files through your launcher, reinstall clean. Check that your script hook is up to date for your current game version.

Missing textures

White, black or pink surfaces usually mean the texture file landed in the wrong RPF or was corrupted during extract. Re-extract to a clean folder and retry the install.

Scripts not loading

Confirm the script hook framework is installed and the .asi files are in the game root - not a subfolder. Most silent-script-fail issues come from a misplaced file.

Out-of-memory errors

Install a memory extender tool. Most heavy mod stacks (multiple vehicle packs, 4K textures, map overhauls) need it to avoid stream buffer crashes.

Works then breaks after patch

Rockstar patches can invalidate script hooks overnight. Check the creator's update page for a new version before blaming the mod itself.

Two mods conflicting

If two mods replace the same base file, one wins and the other silently breaks. Remove one at a time to find the conflict, then pick the one you want.

Tools you'll need

Four essentials that every GTA 6 modder installs before their first mod. All four are free and live in the Tools category.

Script hook framework

Loads custom C# and Lua scripts. Required by most script mods - install once, forget about it until the next game patch.

File browser tool

Edits RPF archives, swaps textures, extracts assets. Essential for any mod that touches game files outside the install root.

Memory extender

Extends script memory heap for heavy mod stacks. Install once, forget about it. Stops crashes on large texture and map loads.

Trainer menu

Optional but speeds up testing. Teleport, spawn, weather control and debug mod behavior without restarting a playthrough.

Grab the essentials

All four tools are free and hosted in the GTA 6 modding tools category. Most take under a minute to install and work with every mod on the marketplace.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need admin rights to install GTA 6 mods?

Most installs need administrator privileges to write to the Program Files directory. Right-click your installer and select 'Run as administrator' if you hit permission errors.

How long does it take to install a GTA 6 mod?

Under 5 minutes for most mods once you have the prerequisites installed. Large map overhauls can take 15-30 minutes due to file size. Script mods take under a minute.

What if my game crashes after installing a mod?

Remove the most recent mod, verify your game files through your launcher, and reinstall cleanly. 90% of crashes come from conflicting mods, missing prerequisites or using outdated tools.

Can I install multiple mods at once?

Yes, but install them one at a time and test between each. Stacking untested mods makes troubleshooting crashes much harder. Use a mod manager for big loadouts.

Do I need to reinstall mods after a GTA 6 update?

Sometimes. Major game patches can invalidate script hooks and mod files. Check each mod's comments for updated versions before patching your game.

Will modding GTA 6 void my game warranty?

No - modding single-player is permitted under Take-Two's official policy. As long as you never load mods in GTA Online, your account stays in good standing.
